Description
The canal milepost, dated "R & D Stone 1819," is located on the east side of the Trent and Mersey Canal in King's Bromley. It is made of cast iron, painted black and white, and features a circular post with a moulded head. The post has embossed letters on two convex tablets indicating distances: "Shardlow 26 miles" and "Preston Brook 66 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
