Description
Bridge number 53 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, located at Woodend Lock, is a canal bridge and lock built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring sandstone arch jambs and coping on the parapet. The bridge has a stilted three-centred arch, with a sandstone block above it inscribed with the number "57". The plain parapet and abutments extend forward. At the rear of the bridge, there is a lock equipped with 20th-century gates. The Trent and Mersey Canal was authorized by an act passed in 1765.
