Description
The Swan and attached buildings are an inn, cottages, and a former warehouse dating from around the 1770s. They are constructed of red brick with a slate roof, featuring a brick ridge stack and integral end stacks. The building is aligned north-east to south-west and faces south-east. It is two storeys high with slightly irregular fenestration, consisting of essentially four bays, three bays, and four bays, with casements that have segmental heads. There is a central pedimented break, with three segmental-headed arches at ground-floor level leading to a central door, and a central first-floor door. The former warehouse is located to the left and has a large double door on the left and another door on the right, both with segmental heads, along with a first-floor door to the left. The inn features a bay window on the ground floor to the left, topped with a hipped roof, and a central door with a pedimented porch. The attached cottage has a half-glazed door. There is also a mid-to-late 19th-century cottage attached to the south-west end, facing south-west, which is two storeys high with three segmental-headed casement windows and a central door. The Swan and its attached buildings are the most prominent structures in an interesting group located at the junction of the Trent and Mersey and Coventry canals. The Trent and Mersey canal was completed in 1777, with James Brindley as the surveyor-general.
