Description

This is a canal milepost located on the west side of the Trent and Mersey Canal in Rudheath, dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets, indicating distances: "Shardlow 81 miles" and "Preston Brook 11 miles." The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
