Description
This is a canal milepost located north of Limekiln Bridge on the Trent and Mersey Canal, dated "R & D Stone: 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 52 miles" and "Preston Brook 40 miles." It is likely that this milepost was cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
