Description
The canal milepost located north of Longton Road is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 53 miles" and "Preston Brook 39 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
