Description
The Trent and Mersey Canal milepost, located south of the former viaduct at Sideway, is dated "R &: D Stone 1819" on its shaft. This canal milepost is made of cast iron and is painted black and white. It features a circular post with a moulded head and embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 54 miles" and "Preston Brook 38 miles." It is likely that this milepost was cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
