Description
The Trent and Mersey Canal milepost, dated "R & D Stone 1819," is a notable canal milepost located on the west side of the Trent and Mersey Canal. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets indicating distances: "Shardlow 55 miles" and "Preston Brook 37 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
