Description

The Church of St Peter Ad Vincula is a parish church located in Stoke on Trent, built between 1826 and 1830, with interior renovations carried out in 1888. Designed by Trubshaw and Johnson, the church is faced with ashlar stone and is constructed in the Commissioners Gothic style. It features a west tower, nave, two aisles, and a chancel. The west tower consists of three stages and is adorned with polygonal angle buttresses that form pinnacles at the parapet, which is topped with blank traceried battlements. The west door has a simple chamfered arch with a hood mould supported by corbel heads. Above the door, there is a three-light window with a transom, a clock, and paired lights in the bell chamber. A flat porch is located against the south wall. The aisles are divided into five bays by buttresses with crocketed pinnacles, each bay containing a three-light traceried window with a transom and stained glass in the lower panels. The chancel has two bays, large polygonal angle buttresses, and a five-light east window in the Perpendicular style. Inside, the church is reported to have a Saxon font, a stained glass east window by David Evans, and monuments including those to Josiah Wedgwood by Flaxman, Josiah Spode II, and John Bourne.
