Description
The Stoke-on-Trent new Cenotaph is a memorial dedicated to those who served in the First and Second World Wars, erected in 1938. It is constructed from bull-nosed red bricks and features a large cross in relief made of buff brick on each face. The cenotaph is set on a plain red brick plinth with a moulded top, and it tapers towards the top, adorned with a ball finial at each corner that supports a flat capping stone. A bronze plaque on the front face of the plinth bears the inscription "THE / GLORIOUS / DEAD / 1914 – 1918 / 1939 – 1945." Additional plaques commemorate significant battles, including the Battle of Normandy (1944), the Battle of Dunkirk (1940), the Battle of El Alamein (1942), and the Korean War (1950-1953), each set up by various veterans' associations.
The cenotaph is enclosed within a square area surrounded by low walls made of brown brick. Each corner features a canted pier with a flat stone cap, and the openings on each side are decorated with scrolling brickwork.
