Description

This is a terrace of five houses, now used as offices, located on Brook Street in Stoke-on-Trent. Built in 1835, it is part of what remains of a longer original row. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick with stone dressings, topped with Welsh slate roofs. They are two storeys high, raised on a basement, and each house originally had two bays. One bay is narrow, containing a recessed doorway within a porch, while the other is wider and features a full-height canted bay window. The houses are mirror images of each other, with paired entrances grouped under a single arched recess. The recessed porches have stuccoed 2-centred arches, and feature Gothic traceried panels on the inner doors. The windows are mullioned and transomed, some of which have been replaced, while the bay windows retain stone mullioned and transomed lights. Each house has a coped gable and parapet eaves, and axial stacks, which have been renewed. The entrances are accessed by steps with cast-iron railings that run along the frontages. The terrace was part of a planned development by the church to attract wealthier residents to the area.
