Description
1 and 2 The Villas are a pair of houses built between 1851 and 1855 by Charles Lynam. They feature a stucco exterior over brick with a concrete tiled roof, and some Welsh slate on the rear elevation. Designed in the Italianate style, the houses exhibit a balanced asymmetry with projecting gables on either side of a central range of four bays. The doorways are located in a porch that projects from the central range, angled with the advanced outer gables. The round-arched sash windows are arranged as single lights above the doorways, while elsewhere they are grouped in various combinations of two, three, or four-light mullioned windows. There is an additional gabled range to the southwest and a tower at the rear. The houses have gable and axial stacks. They were built as part of a private development of middle-class housing, originally comprising 24 houses laid out as a small estate.
