Description
This building is a group of four cottages located at 45, 47, and 49 Longton Road in Stoke on Trent, constructed in 1875. The cottages are made of brick and timber-frame with a plain tiled roof and are one-and-a-half storeys high, showcasing a balanced asymmetry typical of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The facade features two wide projecting gables and a central bay, which has a lean-to roof over a porch on the left and a squared bay window on the right. Each gable includes four-light casement windows with brick arched heads on the ground floor and similar windows above with flat heads. Decorative framing is present in the gable apex. The main range of the building projects on either side of the gabled wings, with lean-to porches in the angles. There is a tile-hung dormer over the central section, and the date is inscribed on the tie beam of one gable. The cottages also have tall fluted shafts on the gable and axial stacks. They were built for the Sutherland Estate.
