Description

The mausoleum, built around 1808, was designed by Charles Heathcote Tatham and is constructed of ashlar in a Neo-Egyptian style. It features heavily battered walls and a squat central tower. The structure has massive corner piers with an exaggerated batter and a very heavy entablature that extends across the facades. There is a small entrance doorway with steeply inclined jambs and a heavy lintel, complemented by ornate wrought-iron entrance gates. The tower has louvred openings with keyblocks above and a low pyramidal roof topped by a lead cross. A wide splayed window is located on the rear elevation. Inside, the mausoleum has a stone vaulted ceiling, and above the doorway, there is a depiction of the Stafford Arms along with the date, 1808. It was erected for the Marquis of Stafford, who later became the Duke of Sutherland.
