Description

Two pairs of gate piers and railings are located at the north side of the Church of St Mary and All Saints. They were built in the early 18th century, possibly between 1707 and 1710, by William Smith of Warwick for the First Lord Gower, with modifications made around the mid-19th century for the Duke of Sutherland.

The larger early 18th-century gate piers are made of ashlar stone and feature large moulded caps and ball finials. The mid-19th-century cast-iron inner piers have panelled sides, dentilled cornices, and small ball finials, although one of the finials is missing. The iron railings between the inner and outer piers are decorated with scroll designs and include foot-gates. The stone outer piers are likely not in their original position but are among the last remnants of William Smith's house built between 1707 and 1710 at Trentham. The cast-iron piers were produced by MacFarlane of Glasgow.
