Description

The Flower Garden Walls at Trentham Gardens were built between 1833 and 1842 as part of Charles Barry’s redesign of Trentham Hall and Gardens for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. These walls are made from limestone ashlar and enclose the north, east, and west sides of the roughly square flower garden located to the south of Trentham Hall.

The walls are low, featuring a moulded base and top, and are accentuated by squat square pillars with fielded panelled sides. Both the east and west walls have a semi-circular seat at their centre, which aligns with the central axis of the garden. These seats are similar to the one located to the north of the triple-arched pavilion, which is also listed as Grade II. The north wall includes a set of steps at its centre that would have led up to the terrace situated between the conservatory and dining room of the main house. Each wall is accompanied by a flower bed with curbed edges.
