Description
The Church of St Mary and All Saints, located on Swynnerton Park Drive in Trentham, was built in 1844 and designed by the architect Sir Charles Barry. This church is constructed of stone in the Perpendicular style and features a nave with aisles and a chancel that are all part of a single structure, although the original chancel and tower have been destroyed. The church incorporates late Norman arcades of four bays, which have late 12th-century capitals and medieval shafts likely sourced from the priory church. Notable features include good screens, primarily from the 17th century, and a Georgian west gallery.
Inside, there is a reredos painting of the Entombment by William Hilton, created around 1810 to 1820, and a fragment of a knight's effigy dating from around 1215 located in the north aisle. In the south chapel, there is an alabaster monument to Sir Richard and Lady Leveson-Gower, dated 1559 and 1591, along with a statue of the first Duke of Sutherland, created in 1838 by Chantrey. Additional monuments include those to the Duchess of Sutherland (1868), A S Leveson-Gower (1874), Florence Chaplin (1881), and the eldest son of the third Duke (1888), all crafted by Matthew Noble. In the south aisle, there is a monument to the fourth Duke of Sutherland, created by Tinworth in 1917. The church is recognized for its significance as a work of a major Victorian architect and for its intrinsic value, which is why it holds a star grade.
