Description

The Garden Pavilion at Trentham Gardens was built between 1833 and 1842 as part of Charles Barry’s redesign of Trentham Hall and Gardens for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. It is made from limestone ashlar and is located at the north-west corner of the parterre.

This rectangular pavilion consists of three square bays oriented east-west and features a classical design. The exterior showcases a series of Renaissance arches with moulded architraves, flanked by freestanding Corinthian columns at the corners and between the bays. Each bay has a moulded entablature with a disc at its center, a deep dentil cornice, and finials on the parapet above each column.

Inside, the bays are separated by Romanesque arches, and each bay boasts a saucer-dome vault.

To the north of the pavilion, there is a set of shallow steps leading to a semi-circular stone seat, which aligns with the central bay of the pavilion. This seat has short flanking screen walls and matches those found in the flower garden's east and west walls, which are also listed as Grade II.
