Description
The statue "Perseus with the Head of Medusa" is a mid-19th century bronze cast of Benvenuto Cellini’s mid-16th century original. The statue features Perseus holding the severed head of Medusa while looking down at her decapitated and contorted body, which is supported on a cushion. He carries a sword in his right hand and wears winged sandals given to him by Hermes, along with the helmet of invisibility from Hades, which is pushed back on his head. Although both figures are depicted nude, Perseus has a narrow sash draped over his right shoulder, falling to his left hip.
The statue stands on a square sandstone pedestal. On the north face of the pedestal, a stone plaque is inscribed with details about the original statue and its replica, noting that it was made by order of the 2nd Duke of Sutherland and originally erected during the reconstruction of Trentham Hall in 1840. It also mentions a restoration and replacement by Elizabeth Countess of Sutherland in 1966.
An additional plaque on the east face was unveiled by Lady Hilda Clarke on May 29, 2004, celebrating the restoration of the statue as part of the regeneration of Trentham Gardens and Estate by Trentham Leisure Limited. The pedestal features a three-stepped base set on a circular platform with two steps around its perimeter, and it is adorned with four columns topped by urns.
