Description

The Dairy House and Dairy is a lodge and dairy located at Trentham Park, dating from the late 19th century. It features a black and white timber frame set on a red brick base, with plastered panels. The building has gabled roofs covered with clay plain tiles, adorned with moulded bargeboards, finials, and pendants. The structure has an irregular plan that includes cross-wings on both the left and right, with a range at the back projecting on the left side. The entrance is situated on the right side, facing the octagonal dairy, which is connected by a covered way.

The exterior showcases a picturesque black and white half-timbered style, characterized by close-studding and decorative bracing above small square panels. The building stands two storeys high and has a three-bay southwest front with gabled cross-wings that jet out on the first floor. The right cross-wing projects further and is supported by a bay window and large curved brackets, while the left gable features a shallow jetty on small carved console brackets. The wall-plate ends and first-floor oriels are also on similar consoles. A pentice is located at the center between the cross-wings, with a half-dormer above.

The left-hand return has a projecting gable on the left and a gabled first-floor oriel on the right, both supported by similar console brackets. The windows consist of 1, 2, 3, and 4-light mullioned casements without glazing bars. The right-hand return features a lateral stack with blue brick diapering and a porch to the right, which has low balustrades and a gabled canopy on consoles with a finial and pendant. The covered way leading to the Dairy is also decoratively timber-framed and octagonal in shape, topped with a steep tiled roof and a small lantern at the apex. Originally, the dairy had a verandah, but most of it has been removed.

Inside, the house is reported to contain a panelled room and a balustraded staircase, while the dairy is lined with plain white ceramic tiles, which are now boarded over.
