Description

The Trent and Mersey Canal Milepost, dated "R & D Stone 1819," is a canal milepost made of cast iron, painted black and white. It features a circular post with a moulded head and embossed letters on two convex tablets that indicate distances: "Shardlow 51 miles" and "Preston Brook 41 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon located in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
