Description
The Barlaston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1926, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated on the village green to the west of Longton Road at the junction with Station Road.
Constructed from red sandstone, the memorial features a Greek cross with cusps at the angles between the arms. This cross sits atop a tapering octagonal shaft that has a moulded collar and ends in a square foot with inverted chamfered stops. The shaft rises from an octagonal corniced plinth with a moulded foot, which is placed on a four-stepped octagonal base.
The main inscription is carved in relief around the frieze of the plinth, reading in an anticlockwise direction starting from the north-east face: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF ALL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR OF MCMXIV-XVIII AND ESPECIALLY THOSE OF THIS PARISH." Beneath this inscription, the names of 19 individuals who lost their lives during the First World War are incised on the faces of the plinth.
On the south face of the top step of the base, the inscription "1939-1945" is displayed, along with the names of seven individuals who died in the Second World War, which are incised on the faces of the step directly below.
