Description
This is a canal milepost located west of Bridge No. 157 on the Trent and Mersey Canal. It is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft and is made of cast iron, painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets, indicating distances: "Shardlow 70 miles" and "Preston Brook 22 miles." The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
