Description
Canal Cottage is a former canal workers' cottage, dating from around 1775, associated with canal engineer James Brindley. It is constructed of coloured brick and has a roof made of handmade tiles. The building is two storeys high and features two window bays, along with an additional blank bay on the west side that contains a door. The windows are two-light flush casements with glazing bars and segmental arch turning pieces on both levels, and the ground floor windows also have night vents. The wide boarded door is set in a frame under a segmental arch. There is evidence that the east bay was added around 1900, indicated by early block bonding between the windows. An external stack at the west gable end has been lowered to below roof level, while existing stacks are located at the east gable and one bay in from the west gable. The cottage also features gable barge boards. It is listed for its group value only.
