Description
Lock No. 66 is a pair of parallel locks located on the Trent and Mersey Canal, with the south lock constructed around 1775 by engineer James Brindley and the north lock added around 1830 under consultant Thomas Telford. The locks are built from blue and red bricks with stone dressing and feature wooden gates. The south lock has raking stone abutments that integrate with stone steps, and the lock side copings are made of stone. The lower wooden gates on the south lock were replaced in 1938, and the upper east gate was replaced in wood in 1986. The north lock has rusticated vertical stone abutments and stone copings on the north side, while the south side is mainly concrete. The upper west gates of the north lock were replaced in wood in 1959, and the lower gate was also replaced in wood in 1984.
