Description
Abbeyfields is a house dating from around 1800, although a house has stood on the site for several centuries. The name derives from the adjoining land once belonging to the Abbey of Dieulacres. The present building is largely a reconstruction of an earlier structure. It is a detached house with roughcast walls, a stone base, and two horizontal stone string courses. It has five sash windows, each set within a moulded stucco architrave. A three-windowed, splayed bay window extends to two storeys on the right-hand side. The main doorway features a part-glazed, divided door and a stone porch supported by plain columns and pilasters. The western elevation includes an octagonal section with stone pilasters. A well-preserved Regency iron trellis verandah with a balcony runs along the south elevation. The roof is slate, with a wood eaves cornice. Extensive outbuildings to the east are not included in the listing. The house is situated within extensive grounds, reputedly landscaped by Webb.
