Description

A Methodist Church and Sunday School dating to around 1870, constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The building presents a symmetrical facade to the street, topped with a pediment. The central three bays project slightly, featuring a 1:3:1 window arrangement on the first floor, all framed by round-headed arches connected by a stone band. A stone portico, designed in the antis style, features a moulded architrave and flat pilasters; the original doors were replaced with glazed doors in the 20th century. The flanking windows are similarly arched and treated to match the first-floor design. A stone demi-oculus is set within the gable, supported by elaborate features. The side elevations are two storeys high with six windows each, all arched like the front facade. The windows are sashed with margin panes. The interior remains largely intact, featuring box pews throughout, galleries on all sides with panelled fronts supported by iron columns with composite capitals, and a tripartite panelled rostrum enclosed by foliated railings. A large organ is located at the rear, with a panelled and pedimented frontal and organ case partially supported on corbels. The building displays a good-quality design with careful material selection and is remarkably well-preserved.
