Description
This canal milepost, located south of the north entrance to the Preston Brook Tunnel, is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 92 miles" and "Preston Brook". The Trent and Mersey Canal, which this milepost is associated with, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
