Description
The Old Number One is a canal warehouse built around 1772, with some alterations. It features whitened brickwork and a slate roof, situated alongside the Bridgewater Canal. The building has three storeys and seven widely spaced window bays on the east land side, along with four additional gabled loading bays on the west canal side. The windows are segmental-headed and have fitted cast iron inserts that resemble small square glazing. A large, slightly off-centre three-storey loading bay extends to the edge of the canal, while the other three loading bays are flush with the walls and now have large windows. Inside, there is an open timber roof supported by massive beams, with the first-floor beams held up by a row of cast iron columns at the centre span.
