Description
Norton Water Tower is a Grade II listed structure built in 1892. It is made of red sandstone and features a cylindrical shape with a rock-faced base that has a convex outline, ending in a pulvinated band. Above this base, there is a plain ashlar cylinder that includes bases for ten pilasters. These pilasters extend to a frieze that frames a high rusticated semi-circular headed opening, which is adorned with keystones. The large openings are partially closed by ashlar screens that have two narrow arched openings. The frieze is inscribed with Latin text, and a dentil cornice sits atop it, supporting an iron tank that features triglyphs between the pilasters and arched sinkings. The rim of the tank is decorated with shell upstands. Access to the tower is provided by a double door with six raised and fielded panels, set within a stone opening that is framed by an elaborate stone pediment.
