Description
Nos. 2 to 12 on Shakespeare Street are houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They were built around 1836, likely by architect John Wardle for developer Richard Grainger. The buildings are constructed of sandstone ashlar and feature a roof made of Welsh slate. They rise four storeys and consist of nine bays.
On the ground floor, No. 10 retains its original eight-panelled door and overlight with glazing bars. No. 8 has a late 19th-century shop front with round-headed lights, slender pilasters, and carved spandrels, flanked by Tuscan pilasters. Nos. 2 and 4 have had their ground floors renewed. The ground floor includes a fascia and cornice.
The upper floors are adorned with sash windows that have glazing bars set in plain reveals. There is a string course at the second-floor level and a still string. A prominent cornice is present at the second-floor entablature, along with a top eaves band and cornice. The buildings feature a mix of brick and ashlar chimneys.
