Description
Nos. 55-59 on Grey Street are shops and houses that have been converted into offices. They were built around 1837 by architect John Wardle for developer Richard Grainger. The shop on the right was renewed around 1900, while the one on the left was renewed in a style reminiscent of 1900 in 1982. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. It stands four storeys high and has three bays. The ground floor showcases the Tuscan Order, while the upper floors feature a giant Ionic order. The shops have curved glass at the recessed entrances and slender pilasters with curved top corners. There is an 8-panelled house door with an overlight set in a deep reveal on the right. All floors have sash windows with glazing bars, and there are pilasters above a prominent second-floor cornice. The building is topped with a cornice and blocking course, and ridge chimneys complete the structure.
