Description
Nos. 2 to 6 on Nelson Street are shops and houses, now functioning solely as shops. They were built around 1836, likely by architect John Wardle for developer Richard Grainger. The buildings are constructed from sandstone ashlar and feature a Welsh slate roof. They rise three storeys, with a four-storey section on the right, and consist of eight bays in total. The ground floor has been altered.
The two right bays, which are four storeys high, have architraves around the windows on the upper floors, along with a frieze and cornice above the first-floor windows, and bracketed sills on the second floor, all beneath an entablature with a prominent bracketed cornice. The top floor features sash windows in plain reveals beneath a cornice and blocking course.
On the left side, there are six recessed bays with first-floor aproned sills and a second-floor sill string, all containing sash windows in plain reveals, some of which have glazing bars. These bays also have a first-floor band, a top cornice, and a blocking course. A later wrought iron gate is located in the first bay.
