Description
Nos. 36 to 92 on Clayton Street are shops and houses, now used as shops and offices. They were built around 1837, likely by architect John Wardle for developer Richard Grainger. The building has four storeys and consists of 28 houses, each with three bays. The arrangement features breaks that move forward and back to follow the curve of the street, with one curved bay at each end, totaling 84 bays. The exterior is made of sandstone ashlar, with some sections painted, and the roof is not visible. The ground floor contains shops from the 20th century. The upper floors feature sash windows, some with glazing bars and others blocked, set in plain reveals. The second floor has aprons and slightly projecting sills, along with a band and a prominent cornice. There is a top cornice as well. Notably, No. 64 has a full-width lunette inserted on the first floor, and Nos. 60-64 have added mansard roofs.
