Description
The Blackfriars East Range is a Grade I listed Dominican friary located in Newcastle upon Tyne. Originally built as a friary, it has since been repurposed for use as company halls, almshouses, and currently serves as an exhibition space, offices, and an architecture workshop. The building features coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and a pantiled roof, which has two rows of stone slates at the eaves. It dates back to the medieval period and was later modified in the 19th century by M.H. Graham.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays. On the left side, the Chapter House has a central two-centred chamfered arch within a chamfered surround, flanked by two cusped lights on shafts in similarly shaped arches. There is an inserted door and balcony, along with a casement window featuring a flat stone lintel and sill on the first floor, which was part of the former Bakers' and Brewers' Hall. The rebuilt Fullers' and Dyers' Hall has doors leading to an office and stairs on the right, set under shouldered arches. Each floor has three-light casements with joggled lintels and a relieving arch at the ground floor, along with a small rectangular window above the doors.
On the far right bay, there is a flat stone lintel above the door to the Smiths' undercroft, with a cross window situated above it. Inside the Chapter House, which is accessed by descending two steps, there is a 15th-century grave slab, which served as a matrix for a brass, attached to the wall and excavated from the friary church. The building is also recognized as a scheduled ancient monument.
