Description
The town wall, along with Morden, Heber, and Ever Towers, dates from the late 13th century and is constructed from large sandstone blocks. The Morden Tower is partly made of brick with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The wall is high, with some sections allowing for a walkway and a steeply-coped parapet. Corbelled turrets are positioned at intervals along the wall, and there is a blocked postern door that once provided access for the Dominicans to their land outside the wall.
The Ever Tower, located at the north, was largely demolished between 1908 and 1910, but the lower courses still display deep splays to the window slits. This tower was granted to the Company of Paviors, Colliers, and Carriers in the 19th century. Both towers are semi-circular in shape. The Morden Tower was partly rebuilt around 1700 by the Company of Glaziers, Plumbers, and Pewterers. It has two storeys and two windows, with architraves framing the central door and two first-floor cross windows that have moulded sills. The first floor is supported by stone corbels and features quoins and a cornice topped with an ashlar-coped parapet, along with a hipped roof. An eroded panel on the first floor notes the alterations made.
The Heber Tower has 20th-century grilles over a two-centred-arched doorway and a square opening above. This tower was restored between 1770 and 1771 by the Company of Armourers, Curriers, and Feltmakers. The entire structure is designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
