Description

The former Cooperative Wholesale Society Printing Works is a building dating from around 1890, designed by F. W. Rich for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a Lakeland slate roof. The building stands four storeys tall with attics and has a layout of seven by four bays, with the seventh bay being a canted corner that supports an octagonal tower. A gable is positioned over the two left bays.

The ground floor includes a round keyed brick arch at the corner entrance, which features a swan-neck pediment above a recessed door. The two left bays have flat keyed round heads for the door and window, while wide elliptical keyed and moulded arches are found elsewhere. A stone entablature at the ground floor supports giant pilasters, and the second-floor cornice projects forward over these pilasters, which are adorned with stone banded rustication. The third-floor windows are framed by plain brick pilasters set in arched recesses beneath a brick cornice.

All windows have wood mullions and transoms, with double keystones above the moulded segmental arches on the first floor and square window heads on the second floor. The three right bays feature a pedimented drip string over banded jambs. A keyed round window is located in the left gable, with smaller keyed windows in the tower. The building is topped with a steeply-pitched roof, and the high dome over the tower is detailed with moulded lead ribs and a balustraded lantern. This lantern has an octagonal stage beneath a round spirelet, which is finished with swept eaves and a ball-and-spike finial.
