Description
The House of Recovery, located in the yard behind the College of Advanced Technology, is a hospital built in 1804 originally as a fever hospital. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. The building has two storeys and five bays, with the central three bays being slightly higher and projecting.
The doors are boarded and set in blocked round arches, which have flat stone lintels. The three central arches are partly bricked up, and the central arch includes an internal string at door-head level. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars, while the fifth bay on the second floor also has a sash window; the other windows are blind, all featuring flat stone lintels. There is a sill band on the first floor and projecting stone sills on the second floor. A gutter cornice runs along the three central bays. The hipped roof has two ridge chimneys and five small ridge ventilators. At the time of the survey, the building was empty.
