Description
Number 1 and the railings flanking the steps are two houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in 1770 by William Newton. The structure is made of English bond brick with a rendered plinth and ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high with attics and features six bays. The fourth bay contains a wide double door with eight-panelled leaves, framed by a doorcase with fluted pilasters, carved spandrels, and a prominent cornice. The first bay has a round brick door arch that has been blocked, with a window now inserted. The plain sashes on the ground and second floors are topped with wedge stone lintels and have projecting stone sills, along with bands at the first floor, first floor sills, and eaves. A later mansard roof includes six dormers with bargeboards. There are six steps leading to the door, which are accompanied by cast iron handrails supported by acanthus-leaf balusters, with the one on the right having been renewed. Inside, the building features some architraves and two Venetian stair windows at the rear, with the lower window showcasing Tuscan columns with fluted necking.
