Description
Blackfriars West Range is a Grade I listed building located on Monk Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. Originally a Dominican Friary, it has been repurposed over the years as company halls and almshouses, and is now used as workshops and a shop. The building dates back to the medieval period, with alterations made in the 18th century and a restoration completed between 1978 and 1980.
Constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, it features a roof of pantiles with two rows of stone slates at the eaves. The structure is two storeys high and consists of three bays on each floor. The east elevation, which faces the cloister, includes Saddler's Hall on the left, characterized by a large trefoil-shaped lavatorium and an early 18th-century doorway on the right, with corbels at the roof level of the cloister. The upper floor has sash windows and some blocked square-headed openings.
Tailors' Hall was rebuilt in 1787, as indicated by a dated plaque, and features a flat stone lintel above a renewed door at ground level, with similar lintels above the sashes on each floor. Skinners' Hall has a pointed-arched door on the right and a three-light 17th-century window on the left, along with two sashes on the first floor and a door with a balcony added in 1980, all having flat stone lintels. All sash windows have been renewed. The building is also recognized as a scheduled ancient monument.
