Description

A row of five houses, now forming four commercial properties (offices and workshops), was built in 1770 by William Newton. The houses are constructed of English bond brick, with stone dressings and a Welsh slate mansard roof, with a rendered gable on the right side of number 3. They are three storeys high, except for number 3, which has four storeys, and all have attics in number 3. The row has 3 bays at each end and 5 bays in the centre. The end houses project slightly. Number 3 has steps leading to a four-panelled door in a stone surround, with a later inserted door to the left. Number 5 features a six-panelled door in a wide Tuscan surround; number 6 has a pedimented Tuscan doorcase with a number on a cartouche; and number 8 has a six-panelled door within a plain reveal. Gauged brick flat arches are above the plain sash windows, which have projecting stone sills to the second floor and to the third floor of number 3. Bands mark the ground and first floor sill levels, and a band runs along the first-floor level. The sash windows have been replaced except for those in number 5. Chimneys are located at the rear of the building, and on the ridge between numbers 5 and 6. Interior features include a boarded dado in the entrance hall of number 4, a ramped handrail on a plain balustrade with turned newels, and some architraves. Number 6 has a deep panelled reveal to one door on the first floor, a renewed staircase. Number 8 has an entrance hall arch, a hardboard-covered balustrade and ramped handrail, and architraves. The interior of number 3 has not been inspected. A basement was opened up in number 5 around 1980.
