172 AND 174, WESTGATE ROAD

172 and 174 Westgate Road are two houses built around 1820. They are constructed of English bond brick with an ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with an asbestos tiled roof that mimics Welsh slate. The buildings rise three storeys and feature a total of four bays. There are two steps leading up to the door of No. 174 on the left, while a long flight of steps leads up to No. 172; both entrances have been renewed and feature six-panelled doors with overlights, set in panelled surrounds with cornices. The windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills, with one wide ground floor window and two on the upper floors, all of which are renewed sashes with glazing bars. The houses also have paired stone gutter brackets and a renewed gutter, along with a ridge brick chimney.
