Description

The Second Church of Christ, Scientist, located at 56 Bath Lane in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is a non-conformist church built in 1878 by architects Austin Johnson and Hicks. The building features a timber frame with brick nogging and a large plain tile roof. Its gabled street front has a high brick plinth and a recessed central doorway topped by a three-light glazing bar overlight. Flanking the doorway are two large three-light cross casement windows, all with glazing bars except for the three lower lights on the left. Above these, there is a continuous row of eight glazing bar windows, followed by another row of six glazing bar windows. The top gable includes a single square louvred panel. The rear brick gable has a later flat-roofed extension on the ground floor, above which is a large seven-light cross casement window with leaded lights, and another louvred panel above.

Inside, the entrance hall and shop lead to a meeting room above, showcasing exposed framing and arch braces that support a timber panel ceiling. The main hall features four bay wooden arcades with narrow side aisles. Each arcade has three square wooden posts with arch braces, and above them are four blind four-light windows. At the northeast end, there is a raised dais with reading desks behind an ornate wooden balustrade, with double six-panel doors beyond.
