Description

Mclean House, located on Leys Park Road in Dunfermline, was built in 1849 and refurbished in 1999. This two-storey building features a five-bay T-plan main block with narrow single-storey wings on either side, the eastern wing having been slightly extended. Originally constructed as a fever hospital, the house has a symmetrical design with a consoled block pediment above the main entrance. It is made of coursed stugged cherry-caulking sandstone with droved ashlar dressings, while the eastern wing is partially harled. The building has an eaves course and droved surrounds to the windows.

On the southern elevation, the main entrance is architraved and features a consoled block pediment above, with a four-panel timber door and a window above it. There are paired flanking bays, each with a window on both floors. The single-storey wings are set back and have a window each, with an additional window in the extended section of the right wing.

The northern elevation includes a rectangular-plan stairtower with a stair window at the centre. The paired flanking bays are set back and have slightly irregular fenestration, with a window on each floor except for the upper floor of the inner left bay. The single-storey wings are also set back, each with an entrance and a window in the extended section of the left wing.

The eastern and western elevations are blank, with the single-storey wings projecting to the south of the centre. The extended eastern wing has a pair of windows, while the entrance to the right is set back.

The windows were missing as of 1999, and the building has grey slate hipped roofs. Inside, the structure was stripped of floorboards and wall plaster during the renovations in 1999, but it retains a dog-leg staircase with a cast-iron balustrade in the stairtower.
