Description

This is a two-storey, three-bay detached villa dating from around 1875, built in a Scottish Baronial style. It is situated in Dunfermline.

The asymmetrical design incorporates crowstepped gables, including those to the dormers, and a turret with a tall, conical roof above the main entrance. The exterior is rendered over brick, and features brick and painted stone dressings. A base course marks the principal southern elevation, and a bracketed eaves course runs throughout. Stone cills are present on the windows. Gableted crowsteps and ball finials adorn the gables.

The principal (south) elevation has a central entrance at the foot of the two-storey and attic turret. The labelmould above the entrance is stepped, with lion's head stops at the centre and a moulding of a dog's head. The door is made of six timber panels, with a rectangular fanlight above. A window above the entrance is topped by a double-stepped hoodmould with a shield at the centre, above which is a crenellated parapet cut away around a round-arched dormer window with a timber gable to the attic. The bay to the left is gabled and projects slightly, with a canted, mullioned tripartite window (previously crenellated) on the ground floor, and a mullioned bipartite window above. The bay to the right of the turret is set back slightly and features a rectangular-plan, mullioned bipartite bay window (previously crenellated) on the ground floor, with a breaking-eaves dormer above. The dormer’s gable has a deer's head moulding at its centre.

The east elevation has a two-bay arrangement, with a window on each floor in each bay. The right bay projects slightly, with a breaking-eaves dormer on the first floor featuring an animal's head moulding in the gable. Smaller windows are found in the left bay.

The north elevation features a round-arched stair window in the centre, and a lean-to porch below with small flanking windows. A gabled bay sits to the left, and windows are present on each floor in the right bay, including a breaking-eaves dormer.

The windows are timber sash and case, with two and four panes. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a hipped section in the northwest corner. Brick gablehead stacks with bracketed cornices are present on the north and east sides. A tall, partially external stack is located to the west, and paired square and octagonal cans top the stacks.

The interior is largely intact, retaining the original layout, including a dog-leg staircase with a timber balustrade. A reception room features a black marble fireplace.

A walled yard adjoins the house to the north. The yard is rectangular, enclosed by rendered crenellated walls. Crenellated rectangular-plan gatepiers are located on the east side. A lean-to outhouse range runs along the north side, with a square-plan stack featuring a crenellated can at the northwest corner. The north wall has irregular openings.
