Description

Poldrait is a 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan villa built in 1889, featuring details inspired by Scottish 17th century architecture. The exterior is constructed from squared, snecked and stugged sandstone rubble, with a base course and chamfered arrises on the single windows, while the remaining windows have roll-moulded reveals.

The entrance elevation includes a single-storey projecting porch at the center, which has a round-arched doorpiece with a keystone, banded and roll-moulded detailing, and a panelled door topped by a balustraded parapet. Above the porch is a gabled bay with a single window. To the left is a taller gabled bay, which features a rectangular projection with stop-chamfered angles, a bipartite window with roll-moulded reveals, and a stone piended roof. The other bays have single windows.

On the side elevation facing south, there is an advanced gabled bay to the left with a full-height canted window that has roll-moulding and a cipher panel at the gablehead. To the right is a 4-light rectangular projection with a balustraded parapet, and above it is a bipartite window topped by a corniced and pedimented dormerhead.

The rear elevation has two bays on the right and center, with a lower gabled service wing to the left. There is a bowed window set in the re-entrant angle at ground level, and above it is a tripartite stair window with transoms and mullions, featuring leaded pattern glazing and stained glass.

The north side elevation has an M-gabled design with three bays, bridged at the center by a single first-floor window.

Inside, the vestibule is adorned with encaustic tiles, and there is fine plasterwork with retained cornices. The drawing room in the southwest corner features geometric rigged plasterwork. The interior also includes American pine panelled doors and dadoes, a dog-leg stair with a timber balustrade, and an archway with a panelled soffit in the hall to the north.

At the rear, there is a tabled outbuilding that has been altered and extended to serve as a garage. The property is also marked by gatepiers and gates, which consist of three ashlar piers with pyramidal caps and ball finials, flanked by snecked sandstone quadrant walls and iron gates.
