Description

Rivaldsgreen is a Tudor revival villa designed by William Burn in the early 19th century, with canted bays added around 1860. The building is two stories high and has three symmetrical bays, along with a single-storey wing to the east. It features cream-stugged, coursed sandstone rubble with dressed droved ashlar around the canted bays. There are base and eaves courses, a cornice, hood-moulds over the ground floor windows, and finialled dormer-headed windows.

The north elevation has an advanced gabled bay on the outer right with a two-storey canted window, a string course at the first floor, a cornice, and a piended roof. To the left is a two-bay wing with a single-storey porch set in the re-entrant angle, which has a cornice, a coped blocking course, and a moulded architrave around the door. The door is a fanlit two-leaf panelled type with an iron bell-pull and a lantern above, with a window on the return to the left. To the left of the porch, there is a window with a plaque above featuring feathers or stylized flames and a cable detail, along with a Latin inscription that reads 'Luceo Nom Uro'. The first floor has two windows with a date stone reading '1793' between them. The far left has another advanced gabled and finialled wing with a window on the north face and an arrowslit above.

The west elevation mirrors the north elevation, featuring a single-storey canted corniced bay with a coped blocking course to the left. There is a two-storey, two-bay wing recessed to the far right, with a window at ground level to the left and a dormer-headed window above it. The right side has a bipartite window at ground level and a bipartite dormer-headed window above.

The south elevation has three bays, with a recessed centre bay that includes a modern porch and a window above. The left side has a gabled bay with an apex stack and slapping at ground level, along with a timber canopy in the gable. The right side also has slapping at ground level with a window above, a lead-covered flat wallhead, and a slate-hung dormer window behind.

The east elevation faces a courtyard and features a stained glass stair window. The villa has a mix of 12-pane, multi-pane, and plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a fishscale slate piended roof over the canted bays. It has tall, prominent corniced and coped ashlar diamond stacks that are corbelled over the gables, along with moulded cans. The ashlar coped skews and bracketed skewputts add to the architectural detail.

The gatepiers are made of sandstone with chamfered piers and moulded caps.
