Description

King's Lodge is a late 19th-century villa built in the Scots Baronial style with French detailing. It is a 2-storey and attic building with 3 bays, constructed from tooled coursed grey granite with contrasting light grey long and short dressings, finely finished to the margins. The building features a chamfered base course, chamfered reveals, finely finished stop-chamfered quoins, and crowstepped gables.

The south elevation, the principal facade, is asymmetrical. A slightly advanced, square-plan entrance tower is centrally located, with rounded angles at ground floor level that become square at the impost level. It has a round-arched, stop-chamfered doorway with scrolled stops at ground floor level, leading to a two-leaf panelled timber door with a fanlight above. A bipartite window sits above the doorway on the first floor. The eaves feature a dentil moulding, and the tower is topped by a steeply pitched, truncated pyramidal spire with decorative iron brattishing, including a weathervane. Decorative, round-arched windows are present on each elevation of the spire. To the right is a gabled bay with a tripartite window at ground floor level; a segmental-arched bipartite window is above, and a quatrefoil window is set within the gablehead, topped with a fleur-de-lis. A four-light canted window is on the ground floor of the bay to the left, extending upwards to form an advanced gabled bay with stop-chamfered angles at the first floor, breaking the eaves, and topped with a fleur-de-lis.

The east elevation was not visible in 1999. The north elevation is asymmetrical with irregular fenestration on the ground floor. A window breaks the eaves with a catslide roof in the center of the first floor, flanked to the left and right by gabled windows also breaking the eaves. The west elevation is asymmetrical with a recessed central bay. It includes a modern porch at ground floor level, and a gableted, pointed-arched, decoratively leaded window to centre of the first floor, flanked to the left by a four-centred-arched window and to the right by a segmental-arched window. A triangular-plan dormer is situated to the right of the attic floor. Gabled bays are advanced to the left and right, with irregular fenestration to the bay on the right.

Most windows are replacements with top hoppers. The roof is grey slate with lead ridges. The building has coped gablehead stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted with decorative hoppers, along with some coped stone skews featuring blocked and beaked skewputts.

The interior was not inspected in 1999.

Rectangular-plan gatepiers with decorative coping are located to the southwest, now leading to a modern bungalow to the rear of King's Lodge. They are flanked by tooled Aberdeen bond granite walls with pointed coping, stepped-up in places with squat railings between. Simpler gatepiers are located to the southeast, leading to Number 14.
