Description
Rhill House is a mid-19th century, 2-storey house with a basement and attic, situated at 18 Richmondhill Place, Aberdeen. The house originally had three bays, with later alterations.
The South (principal) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a flat-roofed porch canopy supported by Tuscan columns, with moulded coping and spherical finials at the corners. A panelled timber door is accessed by four stone steps with flanking railings, featuring glazed panels and a letterbox fanlight. Above the door is a bipartite window. Canted windows with granite ashlar detailing are set within the basement, ground, and first floors, forming a balcony for the attic windows. The attic features a small glazed gablet flanked by 4-light canted, gableted dormers, with red slate-hung dormerheads.
The East elevation is asymmetrical with a central window on both the ground and first floors, and a dormer over. A gableted dormer punctuates the attic. A gabled bay to the left includes a canted window to the ground floor and a 3-light oriel window in the gablehead, accessed by a modern iron fire escape.
The North elevation is also asymmetrical, with railings and steps leading to the basement floor. The central bay features two ground floor windows and a plate-glass tripartite window above. A gabled bay to the left has irregular fenestration and lacks bargeboards, with a stone finial at the apex. An advanced blank gabled bay to the right also lacks bargeboards, supporting a slate-hung platform with decorative iron brattishing at the attic floor.
The West elevation reveals a segmental-arched doorway with a panelled timber door, letterbox fanlight, and blind tympanum. Above is a window. A gableted dormer rises from the attic. Tripartite windows are present on each floor of the left bay, with a gableted tripartite window breaking the eaves to the attic. A broad gabled bay to the right is articulated by a single-storey canted block set off-centre, featuring windows to both returns and a glazed opening flanked by a window above on the first floor. A 3-light canted oriel is set in the gablehead at the attic floor.
The house has mostly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with pierced decorative terracotta ridge elements. Granite skews are found on gables without bargeboards, with coped granite gablehead stacks and circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.
The interior retains fine plasterwork ceilings on the ground floor, decorative timber panelled doors and doorways, and an original staircase.
Square-plan granite gatepiers define the boundary, along with coped granite walls to the South and West. Walls of brick and pink granite, also coped, are located to the North and East.
