Description

This is a building dating to circa 1900, designed by A H L Mackinnon, originally part of Mile-End Primary School. It is a 3-storey and attic, 12-bay school building with classical detailing, constructed from tooled grey granite with finely finished dressings and margins. The building has a rough-faced base course, a dividing band course between the ground and first floors, Gibbs surrounds to the first-floor windows, finely finished and pilastered bays on the second floor, an eaves course, and overhanging eaves with timber modillion mouldings.

The west (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with bays grouped in threes, and two central groups of three bays. A 7-light dormer window is located to the left of the attic floor. Three bays on either side are slightly advanced, with pediments, and each floor has regular window placement. An oeil-de-beuf window is centred within each pediment.

The south elevation is asymmetrical, with nine bays grouped as 2-1-3-3. The ground floor is largely hidden by a flat-roofed modern addition, although regular windows are visible behind it. Three bays to the right are advanced and have regular window placement on the ground, first, and second floors. Windows are visible on the left return on the ground and first floors, and regular fenestration is present on the flanking bays to the left on all floors. The east elevation was not inspected in 1999.

The north elevation is also asymmetrical, with nine bays grouped as 3-3-1-2. Much of the ground floor is hidden by a flat-roofed modern addition, with regular windows behind. Three bays to the left are advanced, with regular window placement on the ground, first, and second floors. A 4-light dormer window is situated in the attic floor. Windows are visible on the right return, and regular fenestration is present on the flanking bays to the right on all floors.

The building has modern PVCu glazing, a piended grey slate roof with lead ridges, corniced granite stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 1999.

To the southwest of the main school building is a smaller, detached Servitor's House, also constructed of tooled Aberdeen bond granite. It features a rough-faced base course and polished margins, with overhanging eaves and queenpost detail to the gables. The north (entrance) elevation is symmetrical with a gabled doorway featuring a glazed timber door and letterbox fanlight, flanked by tripartite windows to the left and right. The west elevation has a single window centrally positioned. A broad gabled bay is on the south elevation, containing a bipartite window and a doorway to the right. The east elevation was not inspected in 1999. The Servitor’s House has modern metal-framed glazing, a piended grey slate roof with lead ridges, corniced granite stacks with scrolled ornaments flanking the pitch and circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 1999.

The site is enclosed by square-plan granite ashlar gatepiers with rough-faced base courses and coped pyramidal caps to the north and west, flanked by low rough-faced walls topped with iron railings. Decorative iron gates provide access, and rubble walls with pointed granite coping define the boundaries to the east.
